ATLANTA(La Visión). Ayer, domingo 20 de mayo, una iniciativa muy especial llegó a su fin. Una de las radiodifusoras latinas más destacadas de Georgia, Viva 105.7 FM, se comprometió a obtener alrededor de 30,000 firmas de latinos residentes en Georgia y entregárselas personalmente hoy a la Presidente de la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos, Nancy Pelosi, junto a los abogados Hernan, Taylor y Lee, y los representantes del programa de radioViva, Panda y Brenda.

También entregarán una carta dirigida al Representante del estado de Georgia en el Congreso, Saxby Chambliss. El texto de la carta dice:

Junto con esta carta, incluimos miles de firmas de las personas que usted representa en Georgia, exigiendo un  acuerdo completo. Y acuerdo es la palabra clave. Medidas efectivas de seguridad en las fronteras y el cumplimiento de tales medidas en los empleos deben ser parte de cualquier reforma migratoria. Sin embargo, para la propuesta cumpla con los problemas que la población de inmigrantes latinos vive actualmente, el plan también debe de proveer un plan de legalización fuerte pero justo, así como un programa de trabajadores visitantes que proveerá una manera legal de que los trabajadores extranjeros ingresen a los Estado Unidos en el futuro.

Ahora es el momento para una reforma migratoria. Necesitamos seguridad en Georgia, y sus habitantes que hoy humildemente piden su apoyo en un acuerdo imparcial.

José Carias, más conocido como el Panda, nos concedió una entrevista en la cual dio a conocer los anhelos de él y de Radio Viva.

¿Cómo surgió la idea para esta iniciativa?

Bueno, lo que pasa es que muchas veces la radio depende de las organizaciones. Sin embargo, parece que esta vez los lideres comunitarios no formularon ningún plan, y por eso decidimos tomar la iniciativa junto con los ejecutivos de Viva 105.7 FM y hoy domingo llevamos aproximadamente 16,000 firmas y queremos agradecer a toda la comunidad por su apoyo de verdad.

¿Cuál es el objetivo que desean conseguir?

El objetivo es presión, presionar un poquito más, hasta ahora Georgia no ha presionado al Congreso, otros estados ya lo han hecho y ese es más que todo el objetivo, que vean que hay muchas familias necesitadas y ese es el propósito de estas firmas de estas cartas.

¿Cómo ha sido la respuesta de la gente?

Increíble, no hay palabras. Ayer (el sábado) precisamente estuvimos en Lawrenceville, y en un lapso de 2 horas recaudamos más de 3,000 firmas y eso habla muy bien de la comunidad.

¿Adónde van a enviar estas firmas? 

No las vamos a enviar, hoy por la noche nos vamos a Washington tenemos sita con los representantes del gobierno y con la Presidente de La Cámara de Representantes, Nancy Pelosi, quienes nos van a recibir las firmas personalmente.

¿Qué opinas del acuerdo de la reforma migratoria que comenzará a discutirse en el Congreso mañana (hoy)?

Muchos países han dicho que es algo injusto pero yo opino que esta bien porque algo es mejor que nada, por lo menos en los próximos ocho años las personas vivirán tranquilas y esto va a beneficiar a muchas familias. Además, en ocho años ya van a haber niños que -van a poder votar para ayudar a determinar el futuro de este país.

Georgia Latinos demand to be heard

ATLANTA. Yesterday, Sunday May 20^th, 2007, a very special initiative was finalized. One of the most prominent Latino radio stations in the state of Georgia, Viva 105.7FM made a commitment to obtain an estimated 30,000 signatures of Latino Georgians and personally deliver them along with the lawyers Hernan Taylor and Lee, and the representatives of Panda and Brenda Morning Show, today to the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who has agreed to graciously receive them.

They have as well sent a letter to Georgia State Representative Saxby Chambliss that in part reads:

We are enclosing with this letter many signatures from your fellow Georgians urging a fair, complete compromise. And compromise is the key word. Effective border security measures and workplace enforcement should be a part of any immigration reform plan, but to comprehensively address the problems the Latino immigrant population is experiencing today, the plan must also provide a tough, but fair, legalization plan and guest worker program that will provide a legal way for foreign workers to enter the United States in the future.

The time is now for immigration reform. We need it for the security in Georgia, your constituents, that today humbly request that you support the bipartisan compromise.

Viva Dj, Jose Carias better known as Panda, granted us an interview in which he disclosed what Viva hopes to accomplish.

How did the idea for this initiative emerge? Usually, the radio stations depend on the organizations, however it seems that this time the organizations had not formulated any plans so in light of that we decided to take the initiative, along with the Viva 105.7 FM executives and today the fifth and last day we have already collected around 16,000 signatures and we would sincerely like to thank the community for their support.

What is the goal of this initiative? The objective is pressure, Georgia has not pressured Congress, other states already have and that is more than anything the objective, we want to show them that there are many needy families and that this the proposal of these signatures and these letters.

How have the people responded? Incredibly I am speechless, yesterday Saturday, we where in Lawrenceville and in a period of 2 hours we got 3,000 signatures and that speaks well of the community.

Where will these signatures be sent? They won’t be sent; tonight we will take off to Wahsington and personally deliver them to the government representatives, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who will personally receive the signatures.

What is your opinion of the immigration agreement that will be to be discussed tomorrow in Congress? Many countries have said it is unjust, however I believe that something is better than nothings at least in eight years they will live comfortably and this will benefit many families either way in eight years there will be children who will be able to vote and help determine the future of this country.
